The University of Alabama's Only Autonomous Living Option

The Mallet Assembly has been the home of unconventional thinkers and idiosyncratic personalities since its foundation in 1961 by Dr. John Blackburn. Seeking to racially integrate the then-segregated University of Alabama, Blackburn founded the Mallet Assembly as an "independent" living community. Use of the word "independent" was a clever enough ploy to confuse racist administrators sufficiently to allow the thin end of the wedge of integration to be inserted into the system. Forty-six years later, as it boldly and defiantly continues to treat women and minority groups as actual human beings instead of chattel, the Mallet Assembly remains an unusual and forward-thinking embodiment of the social ideals of progressives in the early twentieth century.

Mallet is recommended to all academically-minded, intelligent, independent young people. If you choose to live at Mallet, you will meet a wide variety of original and driven thinkers, and you will have an unusual amount of control over your collegiate life. But, as fans of Stan Lee know, with great power there must also come great responsibility. The freedom and autonomy offered at the Mallet Assembly is not recommended to the irresponsible. But if you are inquisitive, driven, and you think you can cope with adult responsibility, you are encouraged to apply for membership.

The Mallet Assembly is located in Palmer Hall, which is north of the Ferguson Center and across the road from Paty Hall. If you are interested in learning more about the society available to you as a prospective Malleteer, feel free to send an email to mallet@ua.edu or call anytime at (205) 348-5046 or you can even write to us as was done in ye olden times:

For anyone who wishes to attend David's funeral, here are the details:
It is taking place at Wall Triana Baptist Church in Madison on Friday, March 14 at 1pm. If attendees cannot dress in formal attire (suit and nice shirt, etc.), I would imagine that a nice jacket and pair of pants with a Mallet shirt would do. Perhaps David would have wanted that.

It's that time again...
...on October 29, 2007, as part of Beat Auburn Beat Hunger, the Mallet Assembly along with 90.7 The Capstone and the UA Film Society is putting on a showing of the most deliciously debaucherous musical ever made!

Get ready to dance with the music, throw things at the audience, and shout at the movie with active audience participation. Props should be provided to the first 200 people, but if you fell like bringing your own a list can be found at http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/

Also, if you've never been to this before, even better! I guarantee it's like no other movie experience you've ever had! Just dress in black drag or something similarly sinful.

Remember to get there early and bring a canned food for admission! We also have two rules for the showing:

  1. Have fun!
  2. Do not throw food or shoot water! You will be escorted out of the theatre. (This includes rice)

Here's the schedule of events:
8:00 - Registration for the costume contest. (Feel free to wear Rocky Horror attire or a regular Halloween costume!)
8:30 - Costume contest inside the Ferg Theater.
9:00 - The movie will promptly start at 9, so get there before then.

After the movie, we'll clean up. If you've had an especially awesome time, we request that you help out!

Remember to research what to say at http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/

Also, join the Facebook group for up-to-date information on all of the goings-on.

Brandon Bird will be speaking in room 313 of the Ferguson Center on September 27, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.. Join the Facebook group "The Mallet Assembly Presents an Evening With Brandon Bird" for more details.

Also, Mallet is trying to get Stephen Colbert to speak at UA. Join the Facebook Group "Mallet Assembly presents Stephen Colbert" for... well, not for more details, but for more useless looking-at-photos-of-people than you're likely to get here. Click here to see some press on this subject from some intern who works at Comedy Central.
